Putting the Vertex FTL-1011 series on 6 meters By Adam T. Cately KB8MDF |
Programming Environment:
For programming, it's all DOS software, so be aware of the computer that you use. The stock programming cable is a VPL-1 or you can use whatever after-market cable you can find.
CE-5 (FTL-1011 4/12/24 channel) version 3.00 or *OLDER* will allow you to enter 6m frequencies directly into the software, and program the radio accordingly. Newer versions will not allow out-of-band entries.
CE-7 (FTL-1011 99-channel) version 3.30 or *NEWER* will allow you to enter 6m frequencies directly; anything older will not allow out-of-band programming. Remember to use the "P-4.bat" file to access the program.
Hardware Mods:
Most radios will tune 6m with no problems by setting the VCOs and tuning across the front end. You *CAN* get better RX by taking a turn or two off the front-end coils, but it's not that critical. You can get 15 MHz or better bandwidth by judicial VCO tuning, but it's up to you how your radio will work. I have a 99-channel radio and a few 24-channel units, and all have worked well with a little prodding.
