Tips for Installing and Using the Midland 70-1488W-CD Windows Programming Software for XTR and SynTech II Mobiles (does not apply to the DOS software) By Sean Smock KC1IJS

These tips were tested on Windows 7, 64-bit, but they should work on Windows 7, 32-bit and on Windows 8 and 10. These tips are untested in Windows XP and might not work. These tips were tested with a USB to DE-9 Serial adapter using a PL2303 chipset. It should work on serial adapters using other chipsets, and with built-in DE-9 serial ports, but is not tested with those.

• Download and install "Msvbvm50.exe" from Microsoft. This is a hard dependency - the Windows software WILL NOT run without this file installed.
• Prior to running the Setup.exe file for the Windows programming software, set it to run in Windows NT compatibility mode. The software will install in compatibility modes for Windows 98 and 95, but after the install you'll have to set the "RadioPro.exe" file to run in Windows NT compatibility mode - you can read and write code plugs to and from the radio, but you won't be able to save or load them from your computer's hard drive.
• COM Port settings should be as follows: Go to the "Port Settings" tab and fill out the settings as follows:
  Bits Per Second: 9600 bps
  Data Bits: 8
  Parity: None
  Stop Bits: 1
  Flow Control: hardware
  Then click on Advanced Settings
  Advanced Settings:
  FIFO Buffers: Checked
  Both Buffers should be set to 1. Leave all other advanced settings at default.
• If you're using a computer with multiple COM ports, or a USB serial adapter, make sure that the software is using the correct COM port.
